The Law Offices of Seymour Wasserstrum

Hi, I’m Seymour Wasserstrum, and I created our firm back in 1974, as a sole practitioner in Vineland, New Jersey. I commenced my legal career as a general practitioner with emphasis on trial work. Over the years, I tried many jury trials. I have represented people who have been injured from automobile accidents, and I have handled cases in the areas of medical malpractice, legal malpractice, social security disability, Traffic Court offenses, workers compensation cases,  various criminal matters, matrimonial matters, and many other legal areas.

Over the years, I was fortunate enough to represent persons involved in many diverse areas, so I had the opportunity to obtain experience in a wide variety of legal areas. A couple of my most prominent trials involved:

1. A five year battle with the Bank of New Jersey and Hartz Mountain Industries, where I represented Eugene E. Mori, owner of the Garden State Race Track. Eugene owned very valuable property in the Hackensack Meadowlands area, and The Bank of New Jersey and Hartz Mountain pursued him relentlessly in their efforts to obtain that property from him, because Eugene, who was land rich and cash poor, was unable to pay some of his mortgage payments. After a hard fought five year legal battle, we won, and Eugene was able to maintain the ownership of his 158 acres of Meadowlands property, which since that time has been developed into super modern shopping malls, and other commercial and residential developments.

2. A four week jury trial, in which I represented a 78 year old man, who was accused of killing a 26 year old man. The dead man had several bullet holes in his head, and his decomposed body was found in a swamp area, about one month after the murder. The motive? The theory of the prosecution was jealousy, because both men were dating the same woman. Her age?  Would you believe 18? The case was even more interesting because four teenagers admitted to participating in the murder. They pleaded guilty, were sentenced to about 2 years each, and then they testified against my client, claiming that he was the mastermind behind the murder plot. Even more interesting was the fact that one of the teenagers that testified against my client was his sixteen year old son. If you want to hear the outcome of this trial, you’ll need to ask me, and I’ll be happy to share all of the juicy details with you.

3. A major jury trial where I represented a woman who was suing for personal injuries because she became a quadriplegic as a result of the negligence of various parties. The accident happened in a very weird way, and many people believed she was a faker. Before trial, none of the defendants offered a penny to settle the case. During the jury trial, the defendants finally realized that it would be in their best interests to offer a substantial amount of money to settle the case, and eventually our client received a very favorable settlement.

4. A jury trial where I represented a woman who fell at a local supermarket and sustained serious injuries. The supermarket refused to settle, because they had a witness who claimed that my client’s injuries were self inflicted, and that she had hit herself with a tire iron. It was really weird. One of my client’s former friends claimed that my client was a phony and that the accident never happened. The lawyers for the supermarket tried to convince the jury that my client was a fraud, and that my client had intentionally faked the accident.Fortunately for my client, the jury did not agree with the strange defense asserted by the attorneys for the supermarket, and we won the case.

I was a sole practitioner for about 25 years, and as the years progressed, my practice steadily grew. As the only attorney in my firm, I found myself often working often seven days and nights a week, and the word “vacation” was not part of my vocabulary. On a typical day, I often appeared in several different courts, often in different counties, and then I would get back to the office late in the afternoon and meet with clients, well into the late evening hours. I usually was out by 9 pm, so that I would have time to get to the gym for my daily stress relief workout. It wasn’t unusual, however, that after I finished my workout, I would return to the office, and maybe work until midnight.

I also handled a lot of cases in night court. One night I defended a client in a hotly contested drunk driving case. Most drunk driving cases take about an hour, maybe two hours. Well, my case started at about 9 pm and did not conclude until approximately 3:00 AM the following morning. The judge was not very happy with me, but since then we have become good friends, and he has actually referred many clients to me.

Finally, my practice got so busy that I finally came to the realization that I had to hire an associate attorney before I went crazy. One clue was in 1998, about 3 days after my 50th birthday. I had worked in the office until midnight, and then got into my Mazda 626 to drive back to my apartment in Philadelphia. Well, I never quite made it to my apartment. As I was listening to KYW All News Radio at 12:30 am, I fell asleep at the wheel. I woke up about 5 seconds later as my car jumped the curb, and I saw myself heading right towards a big yellow yield sign, where Route 55 merged with Route 42. I didn’t have time to avoid the yield sign, and I also didn’t have time to yield. I thus hit the sign head on, and totaled my Mazda, but fortunately didn’t total myself. Miraculously, I walked away without any injuries whatsoever, and I thank God for that.

Shortly thereafter, I hired my first associate. The firm has continued to steadily grow, and we now have four dedicated, hardworking attorneys, and a support staff of about 30 great people. We call ourselves Team Seymour, and one of our primary objectives is to offer our clients the best legal services we can at the most reasonable fees.

As of 2010, I have been practicing law for 38 years. I graduated as Salutatorian (2nd in my class) from Vineland High School in 1966. I went to college at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated Phi Beta Kappa, and Magna cum Laude with High Honors in economics in 1970. Thereafter, I stayed at Penn as I entered their law school program in 1970, and I graduated and passed the New Jersey Bar on my first try in 1973. My first real law job was with Kavesh and Basile, a small Vineland firm. I worked there for a little over a year, and then started my own practice in 1974.
